Now is the time of year when everybody starts getting sick. If you worry about your kids picking up a nasty cold at school, there are some preventative measures you can take to decrease the chances of your kids getting sick at school and at play.
This is the big one. It’s not rocket science either. Everyone should know by now that washing hands is essential to staying healthy. Approximately 80% of sicknesses are picked up through touch. So, by washing hands thoroughly and often, chances of picking up germs decreases dramatically.
Be sure to reinforce the importance of hand washing to your kids. Teach your kids to wash their hands in warm water with soap for at least 20 seconds. That’s about two verses of singing Happy Birthday. Teach by example and make sure your kids wash thoroughly at home as well.
Certain diseases (like the flu) are dangerous enough that you should have your kids immunized. There have already been a large number of flu deaths this year – nearly all of which could have been prevented. Although there is some debate about the benefits/dangers of immunizations, practically all medical professionals stand behind vaccines.
Building up your child’s natural immune system can go a long way to prevent sickness in your home. Make sure your child is drinking enough water, getting enough sleep, eating a healthy diet, and getting in some exercise. Avoid sugary drinks, late nights, fast food, and too many hours in front of the TV. Your child’s healthy body is the first line of defense against sickness –after all, you can’t completely control what your child touches, who sneezes on them, or any other real-world exposures.
