Preparation seems to be a theme in blogs of the day, but sometimes it is hard to get started—especially when it seems like there is so much to do.  One of the best things you can do to get started is to make it simple and take it one step at a time.

Creating Your Kits

Make your first step creating a 72 hour kit and be prepared for the next unexpected event by covering these basic emergency supplies.

  1.       Clothing.  One major thing that needs to be in every 72 hour kit is clothing.  Stick to some basics like a shirt, jacket, pants, and underclothing.  Remember to cycle the clothing out with the changing season and for children as they grow out of their clothes.
  2.        Food and Water. Make sure that you have enough water (around a gallon per day), energy bars, and snacks to last a three day period.  Also, make sure to rotate food before it expires and choose snacks that you enjoy, this will ensure that in an emergency you’ll have food you actually want to eat.
  3.        Supplies. Each kit should have a first aid kit, an emergency blanket, hand sanitizer and other daily basics.  Make sure to include everything you need, but you don’t need to get out of control and pack bags that are too heavy to carry.

Keeping Safe and Simple

Remember that these kits are to help you in an emergency, but that any preparedness is better than nothing, so start today with the basics and add to it as time goes on!
